Agile Project Manager/Product Owner

News Revenue Hub is looking for an Agile Project Manager/Product Owner to execute and deliver key Product initiatives.

Founded in 2016, the Hub is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that envisions a news media rooted in free access, trust, and community investment. Many members of our team come from some of the country’s leading online newsrooms, and the best practices that anchor our services are rooted in experience. We provide the tech and talent infrastructure newsrooms need to develop predictable revenue through voluntary contributions made directly by their readers.

This year, we released News Revenue Engine, a self-service contribution management platform designed specifically for newsrooms. Now, we’re seeking a Product Owner to help us iterate on, scale and improve both our product process and our product offerings.

The Product Owner must be comfortable operating in an environment of change. This is an important role within our growing Product team as we incorporate our first ever SaaS product into our service offerings and business operations. The Product Owner will help maintain and expand News Revenue Engine within an ever-evolving news industry and tech landscape.

You will report to the Director of Product and work closely with the Product and Engineering team, which includes a mix of full time staff members and part-time contractors. You’ll liaise with stakeholders from our Customer Success, Consulting, and Business Development teams to ensure successful adoption of features, functionality and bug fixes.

Key Responsibilities

• 60% Project Management / 40% Product Ownership
• Ensure viability of release candidates for deployment, working with Product Management to capture priorities for public release
• Prioritize defects and escalate resolution accordingly
• Own sprint planning, sprint retrospectives, stand-ups, and other Agile ceremonies
• Support implementation planning as needed in collaboration with Engineering team
• Define user stories and acceptance criteria, elaborating before, during and throughout the execution phase to ensure tasks are ready for dev and a clear test plan is enumerated
• Complete user acceptance testing and facilitate testing by additional stakeholders when necessary
• Help advance tasks and stories through the Agile workflow and ensure status is accurately reflected
• Groom backlog
• Advance opportunities for addressing technical debt as feasible within the scope of each sprint, in accordance with roadmap priorities
• Manage Jira “Development” project on a sprint and story level
• Optimize work plan around team capacity, ensure balance of tasks across team members and support task assignment as needed
• Measure and optimize engineering velocity and throughput (improve predictability)
• Remove blockers to maximize efficiency and output
• Maintain internal documentation as needed to support staff transparency around product process and policies
• Assist with onboarding members to the technical team

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience working with engineering teams in a quality assurance, project management, product owner, scrum leader, or delivery management role
• Alignment with the Hub’s mission, vision, and values
• Strong knowledge of agile/scrum/kanban
• Proficiency in ticketing systems like Jira and wikis like Confluence
• Familiarity with user interface design programs like Figma
• Effective team building, motivation, and collaboration skills
• Solid understanding of severity and impact
• Organized, communicative, and devoted to clear documentation
• Independent judgment and discretion
• Dedication to continuous process improvement
• Good understanding of continuous delivery, deployment protocols, and release management
• Reasonable sense of urgency
• Flexibility, willingness to adapt plans as new information surfaces
