About Wilshire Boulevard Temple
Wilshire Boulevard Temple is the oldest active Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, serving as a spiritual, educational, and community hub for thousands of families. With multiple campuses and diverse programmatic offerings—including supplementary religious schools, early childhood education centers, private elementary schools, summer camps, and the core temple membership community—Wilshire Boulevard Temple operates at the intersection of faith, education, and community service.
As the organization modernizes its data infrastructure, the Temple is seeking an experienced Senior Director of Data Systems (SDDS) to establish and oversee a comprehensive data strategy that aligns with its mission and operational complexity.
Position Summary
The Senior Director of Data System (SDDS) will serve as the primary decision-maker responsible for developing and implementing a strategic vision for data governance, system management, and data-driven decision-making across all areas of Wilshire Boulevard Temple. The SDDS will lead enterprise-wide efforts to enhance data quality, integrate new and existing systems, ensure compliance with data protection laws, and maximize the value for operational, financial, and community engagement goals.
This executive will oversee the implementation of a new Salesforce based CRM, work strategically with Senior Leadership of the organization, lead the development of a data dictionary, and guide the organization’s transition to a reporting warehouse. They will chair the Data Stewardship Committee, drive data literacy and education across departments, and manage a multimillion-dollar data strategy budget.
The SDDS will also lead the existing Information Systems (IS) department that currently consists of an IS Director, 3 full time staff and one part time staff.
The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with deep expertise in data governance, application integration, security, system implementation, and analytics—capable of supervising, training and overseeing a small but effective application team while fostering a culture of data stewardship and innovation throughout the organization while at the same time is willing to dive into everyday tasks as needed to support and train for business needs.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Data Management & Governance
- Develop and implement a comprehensive data strategy that ensures high-quality, secure, and accessible data across all Temple operations.
- Establish data governance policies to manage systems through its lifecycle, from creation to archival, ensuring consistency, integrity, and compliance.
- Lead the Data Stewardship Committee, bringing together stakeholders from various departments to ensure data-driven decision-making aligns with organizational priorities.
- Drive the development of a data dictionary, standardizing terminology and ensuring clarity in data usage across departments.
- Oversee the creation and implementation of a centralized reporting warehouse, consolidating data from membership, schools, camps, finance, and other operational areas for unified reporting and analysis.
- Ensure compliance with relevant data protection laws (e.g., CCPA, FERPA, HIPAA) and industry best practices for data security.
Technology, Integration & CRM Selection
- Lead the selection of a Salesforce vendor for the implementation and integration of a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, ensuring it meets the diverse needs of the Temple’s business units.
- Evaluate and oversee the acquisition of new technologies, ensuring seamless integration with existing platforms.
- Work collaboratively with IT and operational teams in system integration efforts, ensuring smooth cross-system functionality across membership databases, school information systems, financial software, and other platforms.
- Define technical and data architecture requirements for internal and vendor-led projects.
Analytics, Reporting & Data-Driven Decision Making
- Improve the organization’s ability to use data analytics for decision-making, ensuring leadership and key stakeholders have access to actionable insights.
- Develop standardized dashboards and reporting structures that provide key performance metrics across Temple operations.
- Foster a culture of data-informed decision-making, providing guidance to leadership, staff, and board members on how to leverage data for organizational success.
Budget, Leadership & Team Development
- Oversee and manage a multimillion-dollar data strategy budget and an operational budget, ensuring efficient and impactful allocation of resources.
- Lead a small, high-performing application and reporting team, scaling as necessary to meet organizational needs.
- Partner with department heads across the Temple’s diverse business lines to understand business needs and ensure alignment with strategic goals.
- Develop and lead staff training and education programs on data literacy, data security, and best practices in data management.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- 10+ years of experience in data governance, data strategy, enterprise architecture, or related fields, with at least 5 years in an executive or senior leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing organization-wide data policies, governance frameworks, and security strategies.
- Proven success in selecting and integrating CRM systems and other enterprise platforms.
- Strong understanding of HIPAA/CCPA data protection regulations and experience ensuring compliance.
- Expertise in data lifecycle management, data quality frameworks, and data warehouse implementation.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams and executive-level stakeholders in a complex, multi-business-unit organization.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing large technology budgets.
Preferred
- Experience in nonprofit, religious, or educational institutions.
- Familiarity with Salesforce CRM and broader ecosystem of Salesforce solutions.
- Understanding of cloud-based data solutions and modern analytics tools.
- Familiarity with Tableau and other report visualization software.
- Familiarity with dataBricks, Snowflake, and other data lake products.
- Background in change management and fostering data-driven cultural transformation within an organization.
