OVERVIEW:  The Controller is Love146’s financial leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of the organization’s financial operations. This role is responsible for strong accounting practices, accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and sound internal controls that support the organization’s mission to end child trafficking and exploitation.

The Controller brings deep nonprofit accounting expertise and a systems-oriented approach to managing day-to-day financial operations while strengthening infrastructure to support organizational growth and complexity. Operating within a trauma-informed, values-driven organization, the Controller leads with clarity, consistency, and respect – balancing high standards of accountability with collaboration and care. This role is well-suited for an experienced nonprofit finance professional who can operate independently, exercise sound judgment, and serve as a trusted partner to leadership.

COMPENSATION: $90,000-$110,000 annually

LOCATION: Remote EST, with preference for the following states: CT, NC, NY, MA; Hybrid (1-2 days/week in office) if location is within driving distance of the office

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Operations Oversight

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, general ledger management, and monthly close.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate internal financial reports, statements, and dashboards to support operational and leadership decision-making.
  • Oversee and improve the development of and compliance with internal controls, financial policies, and audit readiness across the organization.

Budgeting, Reporting & Grant Compliance

  • Lead public and private grant budgeting, fund allocations, and reporting compliance.
  • Manage accurate tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds, proactively identifying grant spending needs, underspend, or reallocation opportunities in conjunction with programs leadership.
  • Identify and lead any budget modifications necessary to ensure accurately and timely spenddown for all grants.
  • Serve as the primary financial contact for all grants and prepare and submit timely financial data for grant reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain real time understanding of and compliance with all Federal and state government funding requirements.

System & Process Optimization

  • Optimize financial systems and automated workflows, with an emphasis on Sage Intacct, for streamlined reporting, forecasting, and department-level dashboards.
  • Monitor and support the automation of budget vs. actual reporting and real-time access for budget owners.

Financial Support of Leadership

  • Provide real-time financial insights and modeling to inform organizational strategy, cost allocations, and funding renewals.
  • Conduct audit prep, risk mitigation, cash flow reporting, and sustainability modeling.
  • Maintain strong documentation and processes to ensure knowledge transfer and compliance continuity.

Team Collaboration & Development

  • Supervise bookkeepers, ensuring task completion and skills development.
  • Collaborate with program directors and managers to ensure financial fluency and understanding of budgets and grant obligations.
  • Foster a culture of financial clarity, accountability, and service to mission across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (required).

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 6-8 years of nonprofit financial operations experience, including 3+ years in a supervisory or Controller-level role.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex financial systems with multiple funding streams, including recent management experience of federal/state grants, private foundation grants, and restricted donor funds.
  • Experience managing, reporting, creating and submitting GAMs, and closing out state and federal funding.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit audit processes, GAAP, and fund accounting.

Technical Proficiency

  • Expertise with Sage Intacct and Microsoft Excel (required).
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM platforms (required).
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with interpreting financial data for cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise with successful leadership of systems and efficiency improvements.
