Location: US Based Remote (This position is remote, preference is given to candidates located near Boston or one of our regional offices)

Facing History and Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to bigotry and hate.

We seek a full-time position of Senior IT Engineer to join our growing Technology team.The Senior IT Engineer is a key member of the Information Technology department supporting staff located throughout the US, Canada and UK. The position includes direct in-person support in our office(s) as required as well as telephone/virtual support with regional office users.

In this role, the Senior IT Engineer will primarily focus on improving and refining our IT processes, building consistent IT documentation and training materials for staff, and aligning our IT controls with organizational security and privacy policies. They will partner with the Director of IT and cross-functional teams across Technology, Program, Marketing, Development, HR, Finance, and the Office of Equity and Inclusion to deliver a positive impact to the staff we serve and support.

Our team is responsible for the stability and availability of our IT platforms. We govern all processes and procedures which deliver change to those platforms, with a view to minimizing incidents and operational risk while operating efficiently and responsively.

Our work is cross-functional to serve critical mission-driven needs. Our team prides itself in deeply understanding and caring about our users and our mission. We commit to both when we build and maintain technology solutions. Our IT platforms include Google Workspace, JumpCloud, Atlassian, Slack, Zoom, Drupal 9, Salesforce, and more.

Who You Are: You are an experienced IT Professional who is driven by curiosity and innovation. You have a history of leading complex programs to successful completion. You possess excellent change management, documentation and communication skills, comfort learning quickly, managing ambiguity, and maintaining and celebrating a technology vision that meets our current and future needs. You are passionate about cybersecurity. Additionally, you have a proven record of aligning security and privacy policies to IT systems to maintain compliance.

What You'll Do: A successful candidate will proactively identify and lead projects improving IT processes, automation, documentation, training and security to advance IT efficiency and resiliency at Facing History and Ourselves.

 

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

 

Administration of IT Platforms & Systems (35%)

  • Administration of IT platforms, integrations, and controls including JumpCloud, Google Workspace, Zoom, Slack, Jira, Confluence, MDM, 2FA, Backups, DNS, etc.

  • Develop scripts for software installation, system configuration, automation of processes, and creation of MDM policies.

  • Setup, configure and ship macOS/Windows systems for delivery to staff residences or to install at office(s).

  • Setup, install, and configure network equipment, printers and conference equipment at offices as required. 


Customer Service (35%)

  • Provide staff support for software and hardware issues, mobile devices, peripherals, permissions, application licensing, etc.

  • Onboarding and offboarding staff: security and platforms training, access management/software licensing via SSO or Group Assignments, and a general introduction to our technology. 

  • Support setup, testing, and troubleshooting for virtual events, workshops and seminars as required. This occasionally includes supporting educators, board members and other external parties. 


Cybersecurity Focus (20%)

  • Respond to security events, remediate potential vulnerabilities, notify staff as necessary and proactively address emerging issues.

  • Educate about and enforce adherence to security and privacy policies across all technology platforms.

  • Implement security compliance and vulnerability scanning platforms for macOS and Windows. NIST, Nessus, etc.

  • Be curious and investigative. “What could possibly go wrong?”


Professional Development (10%)

  • Maintain proficiency, obtain certifications, and increase expertise in IT and nonprofit technology solutions and use cases by attending trainings, reading industry-relevant resources, attending conferences and more.

Essential Skills and Qualities:

  • Minimum of 3-6 years of experience in a senior technical role.

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience.

  • IT project management experience, including but not limited to: project development, collaboration, documentation, and deployment practices.

  • Experience with scripting languages, zsh, bash, Powershell, python, etc. 

  • Very strong attention to detail.

  • Preferred: experience using JIRA and other Atlassian products.

  • Preferred: experience with JumpCloud, Google Workspace, Zoom, Slack, SSO and MFA implementation.

  • Able to lift 25 lbs. 

  • Successful track record of leading complex IT projects is a must.

  • Prompt and friendly customer service.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Initiative and ability to work independently.

  • Commitment to sharing knowledge with the IT Team and beyond.

  • Cybersecurity Awareness, Response, Implementation and Mitigation.

  • Technical proficiency with macOS and Windows operating systems, networking technology and SAAS management.

  • Desire to learn how to use, test, troubleshoot, and deploy new technologies in a dynamic workplace. We are curious.

Hybrid Work Model (For Region): Facing History and Ourselves operates in a hybrid work model, allowing staff flexibility in both schedules and work locations. This particular position is attached to the New England office and requires in-person and in-office work as needed, but will otherwise work from home, though you may access an office work space whenever needed. Some travel may be required.
