Information Technology Technician

The Morton Arboretum's Information Technology Department is seeking someone with a balance of technical proficiency and friendly customer support skills to join their support and service team. You will be working with a diverse group of tree enthusiasts across multiple departments of this growing organization. The Information Technology department offers a broad range of technology services designed to meet the hardware, software, network infrastructure, telecommunications, audiovisual, and technical support needs of the Arboretum. Position Summary: Ensure proper computer operation enabling end users to accomplish business tasks. This includes installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading all IT hardware and equipment to ensure optimal system performance. Support and maintain systems and network performance. Troubleshoot problem areas in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide end-user training and assistance where required.

Essential Functions: 

  • Perform onsite analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex system problems for staff, and recommend and implement corrective solutions. Assist with proactive maintenance by conducting tests for monitoring systems and network performance, as well as application server performance. Provide related statistics and reports. Accurately document and resolve instances of IT equipment or component failure, repair, installation, and removal.
  • Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot staff workstations and/or software applications and related hardware and software in order to deliver required desktop service levels. Manage user accounts for mail, windows and phone services. Assist with initial setup and relocation of workstations and telephones as assigned. 
  • Assist end-users by responding to assigned help desk requests regarding workstation, networking, audiovisual, and software products. 
  • Assist in preparing, maintaining, and upholding procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring desktop operations.
  • Remediate security incidents and proactive management of endpoint devices in collaboration with the Network Administrator.
  • Provide Point-of-Sale (POS) support to configure and maintain the system for seamless operations. Troubleshoot related incidents as they arise.
  • Assist the IT Operations Supervisor in planning for future AV equipment and organizational technology needs. Support multimedia devices, Smart Boards, and other presentation equipment.
  • Provide assistance to users of teleconferencing, digital and multimedia conferencing, and collaboration technology tools.
  • Assist the CRM and Database Administrator and Network Administrator with departmental initiatives that may require configuration, maintenance, programming, reporting, and support.
  • Demonstrate alignment with the Arboretum’s employee core values to be inclusive, take ownership, work together, keep learning, and make the Arboretum exceptional.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Associate’s degree required, Bachelor’s degree in the Computer Science or Information Systems field preferred. 1+ years experience working in an IT support role required. CompTIA A+ certification or equivalent work experience required. Proficiency needed in Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office, current network protocols, and general knowledge of computer hardware and printers. Experience with Google Workspace applications is highly beneficial. Technical knowledge of multimedia conferencing and AV hardware preferred. Experience with software applications including client-server, web-based, and mobile applications preferred. Strong knowledge of network and system security principles, protocols, and best practices.

  • Physical Demands: Requires some physical activity: limited lifting (up to 30 lbs.).
  • Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors, in an office setting, although travel around the Arboretum is occasionally required. The position is designated as hybrid-eligible. 
  • Equipment: General office equipment, computer hardware, software, printers, network hardware, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Schedule: Flexibility required. Will require one weekend day, and may include occasional evenings.

The expected hiring range is between $22 - $25/hour based on experience that will be evaluated during the candidate selection process, along with internal equity.
