Organization
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a vibrant movement made up of people from around the world who share a common purpose: to help save lives and alleviate human suffering by delivering medical care where it is needed most. MSF teams include doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, mental health professionals, logistics experts, and many others who are committed to providing humanitarian aid. Since 1971, teams have been working tirelessly to help communities caught in crisis, including people affected by armed conflict and survivors of natural or human-made disasters. MSF is independent and impartial and provides aid to people regardless of gender, race, religion, or politics.
MSF’s impact over the past 50 years is a testament to aid workers who have dedicated their time and expertise to these vital humanitarian operations. As an international organization, MSF has medical projects in over 70 countries and sees millions of patients every year. While MSF is an emergency response organization, teams also work in countries facing longer-term or chronic public health crises. MSF engages in pioneering medical research and develops innovative solutions to the challenges facing teams on the ground, including pre-packaged and pre-positioned disaster kits in anticipation of an emergency, mobile surgical theaters that can be used in a war zone, and an inflatable hospital that can be used to meet emergency needs. MSF was originally founded by doctors and journalists who believed in the value of bearing witness alongside the core work of treating patients. They hoped that by bringing abuses to light they could help bring them to an end. MSF speaks out on issues including the impact of harsh migration policies on our patients, the plight of civilians trapped in conflict zones, and the health needs of people suffering from discrimination or neglect. MSF’s Access Campaign is dedicated to advocacy for greater access to essential medicines, vaccines, and other health products.
