Things We Like (November 2013)

A monthly roundup of our favorite nonprofit tech resources and other goodies. Read more posts on our blog.

  1. Do you know someone who has created a great open source software product that really helps out nonprofits and social change movements? Let them know about the 2014 Pizzigati Prize!
  2. Speaking of helping out, San Francisco recently got the hero that it deserves thanks to a child’s wish.
  3. It’s important to remember to take time to be creative, whether it’s finding a new way to solve a problem, or helping kids keep their sense of wonder. Move over Movember, here comes Dinovember.
  4. But there’s still plenty of competition to keep November for mustaches. The American Archives of Art at the Smithsonian Institution has a Pinterest board devoted to facial hair of note.
  5. And there’s no need to keep calling all of that great facial hair your “soup catcher.” Rust-Oleum’s NeverWet causes liquids to run right off of whatever it’s applied to. Although it’s probably a really bad idea to put it on your face.
  6. In September, we talked about the Oxford Dictionary adding ‘selfie’ and a few other words, but now they’ve named ‘selfie’ their Word of the Year!
  7. Here’s another great demonstration of the power of the internet. When a World War II veteran passed away without any close family that could attend his funeral, hundreds of people who saw his obituary online showed up to pay their respects.
  8. Jason Silva’s short film about living life to the fullest is inspirational and just might make you rush out the door to try to live a fuller life.
  9. To bring things back up a little bit, why not try the full length story of Lil’ Bub, one of the internet’s most famous cats – and that’s saying something.
  10. We’ll wrap up with a video of Bob Dylan’s Like a Rolling Stone, but it’s not just any video. Telling you anything else would give away the surprise.
