2011 NTEN Community Survey Report

The Nonprofit Technology Network (NTEN) conducts an annual Community Survey to find out more about the individuals and organizations in the NTEN community: we want to find out how these individuals and organizations use technology in their work, gauge the impact of NTEN programs and services on their professional development and their organization’s missions, and track trends in the nonprofit technology community over time.

The NTEN Community is made up of both dues-paying members (referred to as Members in this report) and program participants (Non-Members), with just over 10,000 individuals represented in membership, and a total of more than 45,000 members and non-members engaging with NTEN programming and resources at the time the survey was conducted.

In May of 2011 we circulated the link to the online survey to the NTEN Community via direct email and announcements in our community channels, including our blog, NTEN Discuss email list, our Facebook page, and our Twitter network. We received responses from 1,070 individuals.

Key Findings from the 2011 Survey

The gap between Members and Non-Members is significant when we asked respondents to rate the Tech Adoption level of their organization in comparison to the nonprofit sector, with Member Organizations nearly 10% more likely than Non-Member Organizations to be on the Leadership end of the adoption spectrum.
Members with longer tenure are more likely to assess their organizations at the Leadership end of the spectrum.

Like last year, we continue to see that Technology Leader Organizations can come from all organizational sizes, suggesting that budget is not a direct factor for technology leadership.

  • IT Staff continues to be NTEN’s largest constituency (22%), followed by Marketing/Communications Staff (20%).
  • The fastest growing constituency is Fundraising/Development Staff, increasing more than 2% compared to last year.
  • Security is the top consideration for organizations in the NTEN community when considering Cloud technology solutions.
  • The perceived importance of technology for organizational work in various departments has increased in all areas, with Administrative work seeing the biggest increase, compared to last year’s survey.
