Heather McCormack is passionate about using the power of community media to engage all people, especially those who are traditionally underrepresented, in telling their stories in ways that are empowering and accessible. She is currently the Youth Media Coordinator and Boston Free Radio and Podcast Program Manager at Somerville Media Center in Somerville, MA. Heather graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2010 with a BA in Communication and a Certificate in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latin@ studies. After graduation she spent a number of years running arts-based after school programming in the Mystic Housing Development in Somerville, MA. In 2015 Heather received her M. Ed from the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Prevention Science and Practice program. She has been involved in radio since the age of 14, when she got her first radio show at WHAB 89.1 FM in high school, later producing and co-hosting shows at WUML 91.5 FM and UNregular Radio. 2 years ago she began producing "Make it Stop: A Bad Music Podcast", a comedic music commentary podcast that she also co-hosts and edits. Heather developed a 4-part podcast education curriculum that she currently teaches at numerous community based non-profits across the Boston area, supporting everyday folks in developing their own original podcast productions.
