Volunteer Impact Made Practical: Devise Your User-Friendly Data Collection Tool


Just what do your volunteers do that improves the lives of your clients and advances the mission?  That’s the question to answer when developing strategic measures of volunteer impact. This kind of data is needed to impress funders, educate Board members, and advocate for volunteer programs. But as you create these metrics, you need to ensure that the data will actually be collected and tracked. In this interactive session, learn how to create relevant impact measures and devise data collection tools that can be readily implemented in your workplace. Ensure that what gets measured gets done.

Learning Outcomes

  • Practice creating indicators that illustrate the impact of volunteers on the program and the effectiveness of your volunteer management practices
  • Review the spectrum of data collection options available to nonprofits, from the sophisticated to the elementary
  • Devise relevant methods for collecting impact data that they can actually implement and track on the job

Liza J. Dyer, CVA, has been working and volunteering in the nonprofit and public sectors for more than 15 years. She is currently a Volunteer Services Program Coordinator at Multnomah County Library, a public library system in Portland, Oregon which engages over 2,000 community members as library volunteers each year. Liza has previously worked in museums and science centers where she taught people about science, led teams of citizen scientists, and talked about whales (almost) every day. When not at work, Liza can be found knitting, reading, exploring, and volunteering in the community. She is proud to be an AmeriCorps alum and Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA). Elisa Kosarin, CVA, helps nonprofits deliver fully on their mission and raise more money by strategically integrating volunteer management and development. With over 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Elisa’s work is driven by the underlying belief that volunteers have the potential to transform communities – if nonprofits commit to nurturing the volunteer/nonprofit relationship and developing high impact volunteer programs.

Elisa is Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA) and guest blogs regularly for the VolunteerMatch Engaging Volunteers website, and has hosted webinars for the AL!VE and VolunteerPro communities. In her spare time, you can find Elisa in a dance studio or behind a sewing machine, putting together a new quilt.
