Love ‘Em or Lose ‘Em: Find and Nurture Sustainers to Build Lifelong Relationships and Lifetime Value

Too often, organizations make a sustainer push, sign up a new batch of supporters, and then don’t reach out again until those supporters’ cards are expiring. But organizations like UNICEF USA, the African Wildlife Foundation, and the Drug Policy Alliance have recently seen incredible success in their monthly programs that are now a lifeblood of their organizations. They’ve also used technology and analytics effectively to upgrade and increase sustainer gift size, nurture donors over long-term relationships, and convert one-time donors to monthly. The lifetime value of the donor base of these organizations has increased dramatically.

With real metrics and detailed methodology, this session is designed to showcase best practices—and lessons learned—in using technology effectively to offer supporter experiences from first touchpoint through ongoing giving. We’ll discuss modern and innovative ways to cultivate sustainers beyond the monthly gift, raise the dollar amounts of monthly gifts, use peer-to-peer and advocacy campaigns, and implement creative retention strategies.

Learning Outcomes

  • Omnichannel sustainer recruitment, renewal, and retention strategies
  • Creative campaigns for upeselling one-time donors and upgrading existing sustainers
  • Use of marketing automation and personalization
