20NTC Session Proposal

Harnessing the Power of Digital Storytelling

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for advocates and activists trying to humanize issues and actions. Technology has gifted us the opportunity to communicate these stories in multiple “languages,” including in warmer media formats such as video, audio, and imagery. Especially for nonprofits trying to coalesce action on abstract issues such as public health and the environment, this capacity to have our stories seen, heard, felt, and remembered is invaluable. Using art to anchor your message allows you to reach a broader audience with content they actually want to read, support, and share.

This session will detail strategies for leveraging personal stories into strong tools for advocacy, education, and community building. Major points include how to build up a cache of stories, multimedia storytelling pro-tips, and the advantages of art-driven advocacy, and an interactive practical example to show how quickly an art-driven digital storytelling campaign can come together.

This session will be accompanied by an interactive practical example where attendees will participate in a real-time, achievable and replicable art-driven digital storytelling campaign, demonstrating the ease and accessibility of launching digital storytelling efforts.
