Grant Proposals for Newbies: Bootstrapping Research and Preparation

How do you find out about grants? How do you apply for them? How do you interpret those instructions, and whether your organization has half a chance at getting them? How do you keep track of all the deadlines and the pending proposals and declines and what else needs to be done? This session is for you if your organization:

  • Does not have any dedicated grant writing staff
  • Has little experience in applying for grants
  • Lacks a budget for foundation/grant databases

Applying for grants need not be a mystery. If you’re willing to be patient and invest the time, you can incorporate grants into your fundraising strategy without a huge outlay of funds for databases or needing to hire a consultant. If you have the capacity to do those things—wonderful. For those who are trying to bootstrap this area of fundraising, we’ll discuss free online resources for finding the right grant opportunities and doing your homework on funders, how to prepare for online submissions, and how to stay organized when grant writer is just one of the hats you wear.
