Wikipedia as a Platform for Change: Making the Largest Open Resource of Human Knowledge Truly Diverse

While Wikipedia intends to be the world’s largest and open resource of human knowledge, only 8.5 to 16% of its editors worldwide are female. It is often pointed out that Wikipedia reflects male knowledge, which doesn’t represent all of humanity. The representation of knowledge and culture of other marginalized communities, such as people of color, LGBTQI communities, indigenous peoples and others from the global south, is lacking too.

While the Wikimedia Foundation puts effort into increasing diversity, the situation will only truly change if more people who are aware of these issues edit more, and existing editors become more aware of these issues. Groups around the world, such as the Whose Knowledge? campaign and WikiProject Women, support and train new editors with these issues in mind.

In this panel editors who are involved as part of their work or as volunteers will share their expertise, best practices, and challenges they have faced while contributing to Wikipedia.

  • Learn about diversity and gender-gap issues in the Wikipedia community—history, current state, and plans for the future
  • Get motivated to become Wikipedia contributing editors and encourage others to edit too
  • Learn about the challenges of editing in Wikipedia, social and technical, and get ideas to solve them
