Come join a growing team of conservation professionals at the Xerces Society who are dedicated to protecting some of the world’s most important animals. We are seeking a Web Developer to join the communications team and oversee development and maintenance of websites that advance the Xerces Society’s scientific and educational mission.

At Xerces, we harness the knowledge of scientists and the enthusiasm of the public to implement conservation programs. We take action by helping farms and public agencies develop conservation plans for pollinators and beneficial insects, producing ground-breaking publications on insect conservation, training thousands of farmers and land managers to protect and manage habitat for beneficial insects, protecting endangered species and their habitat, and engaging the public to raise awareness about invertebrates found on farms, forests, prairies, deserts, streams, wetlands, towns and cities. Our methods focus on habitat conservation planning, education, scientific analysis, advocacy, and applied research to conserve invertebrates, such as bees, butterflies, mollusks, and fireflies.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

The Web Developer will lead the expansion, improvement and maintenance of Xerces Society websites*, which include xerces.org and multiple community science websites. We seek applicants with prior experience building and maintaining Drupal and/or WordPress sites, managing web applications and sites with large databases, co-developing web solutions with external partners and non-technical colleagues, and effectively managing multiple projects.

As the first in-house web developer at a small but growing organization, this position will play a lead role in organizing and coordinating site maintenance and development, with support from Xerces’ existing web development contractors. The ideal candidate will have a growth mindset and willingness to tackle both frontend and backend development. The candidate will work closely with our staff, partners, and contractors to develop solutions that meet the needs of Xerces programs and users.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Developer will:
  • Maintain, analyze and improve the Xerces Society’s Drupal and WordPress websites* to support programmatic functions and provide effective user experience.
  • Gather program and user requirements to create new or updated sites, pages and applications that meet industry best practices and the functional and experiential requirements of users.
  • Coordinate special projects with web contractors, serving as the liaison between Xerces staff and developers to ensure products are documented and delivered to specification and on time.
  • Evaluate functionality and program needs across Xerces websites to identify efficiencies.
  • Develop solutions for web applications for websites with large databases and visualization software, including ArcGIS, and complex access requirements by multiple users.
  • Perform routine site audits and correlating technical fixes as required, including technical and SEO improvements.
  • Ensure that web content and functionality comply with current best practices and standards including WCAG and IT security requirements.
  • Monitor security threats and perform plugin, platform, and security updates in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure all delivered code is tested and works as expected prior to deployment.
  • Develop help interfaces and workflows for website users, including support and training for Xerces staff serving as content authors.
  • Effectively communicate concepts via mockups and wireframes.
  • Ensure all website assets are backed up and recoverable, and manage version control of site updates
  • Other duties as assigned.

STATUS & SCHEDULE:

Full-Time, hourly, non-exempt position. This position is scheduled to work approximately 40 hours per week, with work scheduled between Monday thru Friday, generally between the hours of 8am- 5pm (local time zone). However, the employee may be required to work occasionally on a weekend or holiday to address urgent and important website or other technical issues.

BENEFITS: This position includes a generous benefits package including; twelve paid holidays, paid time off accrued at a rate of 1.73 hours for every 30 hours of pay (15 days per year for a 40 hour/week schedule), medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage, the option to participate in a pre-tax flexible spending account for medical and dependent care expenses, short-term disability insurance where not provided under state law, long-term disability insurance, participation in a 401k retirement program with employer contribution match upon meeting eligibility requirements, and a flexible work environment.

Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED

  • Demonstrated web development experience, including a minimum of 3 years of professional WordPress and/or Drupal development and administration experience with custom themes and 3rd party plugin integrations.
  • Proficiency in industry standard front and back end development languages (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, Java).
  • Basic knowledge of technical SEO best practices.
  • Excellent problem solver who takes initiative to understand, share, and solve potential issues.
  • Strong communicator, able to work collaboratively with a wide range of users and stakeholders.
  • Growth mindset and experience with both frontend and backend development.

PREFERRED

  • Full-stack development experience preferred, although other strong candidates will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating APIs into existing frameworks.
  • Experience coordinating the full web development process: requirements gathering, technical design, development, testing, and implementation.
  • Experience building/maintaining custom relational databases for biological data using industry standards like Darwin Core.
  • Mobile web application implementation.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED

  • High School Diploma
  • Certificate in web development
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States with any employer. Visa sponsorship is not provided for this position.

PREFERRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or a related discipline. An additional four years of applicable work experience may be substituted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Be able to perform the following with reasonable breaks and/or reasonable accommodations:

  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a telephone, copy machine, and computer printer for periods of 1-8 hours.
  • Able to move and transport supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 20/ 30 lbs;
