Video Producer and Storyteller

Position Summary:

Family Equality has an immediate opening for a full-time video producer to oversee all video content production and lead the organization’s storytelling work. Sharing the stories of LGBTQ+ families, and of LGBTQ+ people on their paths to parenthood, is a critically important part of our work to advance lived and legal equality for our community, and the ideal candidate has a passion for video production and an understanding of the power of video content to engage audiences in Family Equality’s work.

Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Video Producer and Storyteller is responsible for the production of all video content at Family Equality, including interview/documentary-style storytelling videos, rapid-response advocacy videos, marketing videos, animations, and educational videos. The ideal candidate has excellent storytelling skills, advanced technical skills, and is comfortable building trust to conduct interviews about sensitive topics.

The Video Producer and Storyteller will also develop and manage an organization-wide story bank containing story leads, submissions and content. The successful candidate will have a strong familiarity with the issues facing LGBTQ+ families and prospective LGBTQ+ parents, and a commitment to ensuring Family Equality’s video and storytelling content reaches as diverse an audience as possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Create innovative, socially shareable videos in support of Family Equality’s mission, from idea conception to delivery, including shooting, lighting, editing, graphics, sound, and other post-production elements;
  • Think creatively to develop and pitch ideas that amplify Family Equality’s work to existing supporters and new audiences;
  • Follow and further develop Family Equality’s style guide;
  • Produce live events through livestreams and real-time captures;
  • Coordinate with Communications Team members to manage video requests and establish project timelines to fit overall content calendar;
  • Adapt schedules and projects accordingly in a fast-paced, flexible work environment with multiple organizational priorities;
  • Work to streamline Family Equality’s editing and shooting process to create an efficient and seamless process from conception to delivery;
  • Serve as interviewer and on-the-ground coordinator for video shoots on location, working with video subjects to build trust, develop stories, and ensure a positive storytelling experience;
  • Manage contractors and other collaborators on storyboarding, editing, and graphic design as needed to assure timely, consistent delivery of content within budget, style, and messaging guidelines;
  • Conduct outreach to LGBTQ+ community members to identify and onboard storytelling participants;
  • Develop and manage organization-wide story bank accessible to staff across the organization;
  • Support events and special assignments in addition those listed above.

Skills & Qualifications:

All candidates must have a “can do” attitude, enjoy a fast-paced environment, and be highly organized without losing sight of larger objectives.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Film plus at least five years in real-world video production OR equivalent work experience or certification;
  • Strong portfolio of video projects showcasing a true mastery of skills from concept to completion;
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player with a positive attitude;
  • Experience working in the field, filming in a variety of locations and mediums;
  • Advanced experience using Adobe Creative Cloud products including Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or others;
  • Experience shooting with DSLR cameras with interchangeable lenses;
  • Advanced motion graphics experience, whether creating graphics from scratch in After Effects or using templates;
  • Experience interviewing subjects about sensitive topics;
  • Awareness of and interest in navigating implicit bias in storytelling;
  • Strong social media skills and understanding of platforms;
  • Project management skills that enable the juggling of multiple tasks, allocating and optimizing resources, and managing timelines;
  • Experience in a non-profit, journalism, or political campaign setting preferred;
  • Strong commitment to equity for all LGBTQ+ families, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, ability, gender identity/expression, and family structure;
  • Experience/fluency with issues facing LGBTQ+ families, and familiarity with content written for parents and prospective parents;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, G Suite, and online tools such as Asana and Slack;
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently for work (estimated 15-25%), proximity to a major airport preferred.

Family Equality is a remote workplace, with employees distributed across the country. As such, the Video Producer and Storyteller may work remotely from their home office, so long as their location affords reliable phone service and high-speed internet access.
