Organizational Overview:

The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic and reproductive justice. Together with our members, we advocate for cultural and political change to ensure access for people who face the greatest obstacles to abortion access: women with lower income, women of color, young women, and transgender and gender nonconforming people. This is an exciting time for NNAF as we grow, nurture new funds emerging in underserved areas, deepen our support for funds working within the reproductive justice framework, and co-lead a bold national coalition campaign to increase abortion access by restoring Medicaid coverage for abortion. We are working to make access to abortion a reality for everyone, no matter their resources. NNAF is comprised of a multi-racial, multi-religious, gender expansive staff of 50, located across the United States. We know how important it is to support our remote staff to maintain connection and cohesiveness as a team. To this end, we ensure weekly one-on-one supervision, face-to-face virtual staff meetings, quarterly in-person meetings, and more.

Title: Graphic Designer

Status: The position is full-time, non-exempt, salaried.

Compensation: $60,960 – $64,008, commensurate with experience, with competitive benefits package

Position Description

The Graphic Designer is responsible for using design and creative thinking to help implement NNAF’s strategies for elevating the work of abortion funds and changing dominant cultural narratives about abortion. You’ll seek fresh, exciting ways to convey big ideas while staying true to the core of NNAF’s established brand. You’ll (hopefully!) also find the simple things oddly satisfying: setting type beautifully, making an info-dense chart so pretty it practically sings, building clean organized files that are easy to come back to months later. This position coordinates collaboratively with the Design and Branding Manager, the Communications department, and cross-departmentally to create graphics and layouts for social media, websites, emails, reports, direct mail, newsletters, and merchandise. With the support of our brand style guide, you will work with typography, photography, illustrative elements, and video assets to create striking, brand-aligned visuals to use for education, culture change, marketing, promotion, and the amplification of abortion funds.

Essential Job Functions
Digital + Print Graphic Design (approximately 65% of the position)

  • Create graphics, layouts, and data visualizations for print, digital, and video, in alignment with NNAF’s graphic and brand identity.
  • Prepare production files using appropriate file hygiene for digital and physical assets, including social media, email, websites, reports, infographics, newsletters, presentations, banners, step and repeats, brochures, programs, one pagers, etc.
  • Communicate with third party vendors to ensure proper specs are followed for merchandise, web design, and print.
  • Format NNAF public and network documents, including reports, toolkits, social media and communications plans, and other documents for internal, network-wide, and public circulation.
  • Edit photographs for consistent alignment with brand standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to abortion funds in the form of design consultation, as well as direct assistance with design and branding needs as capacity allows.

Brand Maintenance (approximately 15% of the position)

  • Uphold creative standards and brand image in the execution of all projects.
  • Regularly update Canva or similarly accessible image bank with assets for abortion funds’ independent use.
  • Work closely with the Design and Branding Manager to add to, refine, and maintain brand assets, templates, website themes, photo libraries, and style guides.
  • Stay current on best practices for digital engagement and accessibility for relevant digital platforms.

Department Coordination and Strategy Implementation  (10%)

  • Implement NNAF’s merchandising strategies, including maintaining inventory systems, photographing products, and communicating about merch with NNAF staff, our fulfillment partner, and occasionally customers.
  • Communicate effectively across departments to ensure the execution of design projects meets organizational strategic needs.
  • Provide suggested copy edits when required to support effective graphic design and on-brand communication.
  • Maintain and publish website content as needed.

Other (approximately 10% of the position)

  • Actively participate in required convenings, summits, retreats, and staff meetings, and participate in required virtual staff communications.
  • Protect the organization by keeping information confidential.
  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by NNAF, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to your role.
  • Perform duties required of all staff to support smooth internal operations such as submitting timely expense reports, reimbursement requests, and timesheets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Travel Expectations

Ability to travel as job requires, approximately six times minimum per year. Travel will primarily be overnight, for approximately 2-5 days, and national. Regardless of where employee lives, and barring travel delays outside of an individual’s control, employee must be able to arrive at destination on-time.

Please note: Due to COVID-19, NNAF has suspended all travel to minimize risk of exposure for staff through the end of the year. This applies to all NNAF related work. We will update the travel suspension only when the pandemic significantly improves and conditions become safer.

 

Benchmarks

  • Create graphics and layouts for print, digital, and video, on schedule and in alignment with NNAF’s graphic and brand identity, using appropriate file hygiene and following correct specs for production, for 6–10 digital campaigns and/or communications initiatives annually.
  • Work closely with the Design and Branding Manager to add to and refine brand assets (monthly clean-up), templates (quarterly refreshes), photo libraries (organizing new photo folders a minimum of 2x annually), and style guides (annual updates).
  • Communicate effectively within and across departments as well as with vendors to support current collaborative projects at least weekly, responding to messages within 2 business days; monitor shop inbox and respond to messages from shop customers within 4 business days .
  • Submit all baseline work accurately and on time every cycle.  Baseline work includes Certify (monthly) or submitting reimbursements within 90 days of expenses, workplanning in Trello (keeping your own annual and quarterly workplan updated and participating in maintaining your department’s), Slack and email communication (daily), timesheets in ADP (bi-weekly), participating in all staff meetings (monthly) and department meetings, and consistently working core hours.

 

Qualifications
Job experience requirements

  • Three or more years experience in digital and print design with strong layout skills
  • One or more years experience in responsive web design
  • Proficient in today’s design software including Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)

Specific skill sets

  • Social media savvy and ability to design engaging digital content
  • Proficient in Google Calendar and Drive, Microsoft Word and Excel, and open to learning new technologies and software as needed
  • Experience creating public presentations using Google Slides, Prezi, PowerPoint, or similar programs
  • Excellent attention to detail in design as well as in grammar and basic copy editing
  • Ability to balance, communicate about, and manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities for organizational needs
  • Strong commitment to deadlines

Preferred skill sets

  • Familiarity with visual and digital accessibility best practices
  • Photography skills
  • WordPress and/or CSS proficiency
  • Experience designing for merchandise
  • Some familiarity with video editing programs such as Premiere, Final Cut Pro, or iMovie
  • Some familiarity with Tableau

Work Environment

  • This role is remote. Must be able to participate in online virtual communications including email, video conferencing, and other online tools used to facilitate virtual office culture and work sharing.
  • This position is full time, with employee’s regular full time schedule to be approved by supervisor. Regular hours must include attendance during core business hours from 12:00pm – 5:00pm Eastern Time, Monday through Thursday. Occasional work on evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to conduct business in English; however, fluency in languages other than English is a plus.
  • Smoke- and drug (illegal or recreational)-free environment.
  • Some work at off-site locations may be required; NNAF aims for accessibility in any off-site location that we have control of, but some of them may not be fully accessible.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employee is regularly required to communicate effectively via computer, via phone, and in person.
  • This role requires frequent sitting. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 40 pounds.
