Direct Marketing Fundraising Consultant

Drug Policy Alliance

http://www.drugpolicy.org

Project Overview

The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) is seeking a fundraising consultant, or consultants, to lead the strategy, execution, and analysis of its online and offline direct marketing program. The consultant(s) will have a special focus on growing DPA’s donor base, improving the direct marketing program’s return on investment, strengthening the donor pipeline, and helping to promote DPA as vibrant, passionate, and modern drug policy advocates and racial and social justice reformers.

DPA will accept proposals from integrated fundraising consultants. DPA will also accept proposals from consultants that specialize in either digital programs or direct mail programs for the relevant portion of the scope of work.

Background

The war on drugs, now waged for more than 50 years, has fueled the dual crises of mass criminalization and drug overdose deaths that we are experiencing today. Drug possession is the most arrested offense in the United States, with more than 1.15 million arrests in 2020 – and at the same time, drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death, with more than 100,000 lives taken in the one-year period ending April 2021.  While nearly everyone has been affected in some way by this policy failure, the drug war’s impact, if not the intent, has been profoundly racist. Due to targeted policing and enforcement, Black people are 24% of those arrested despite making up just 13% of the U.S. population, and despite the fact that Black and white people use and sell drugs at similar rates.

DPA is the leading organization in the U.S. promoting alternatives to the war on drugs. We envision a just society in which the use and regulation of drugs are grounded in science, compassion, health, and human rights and in which the fears, prejudices, and punitive prohibitions of today are no more.

We have played a pivotal role in transforming drug policy in the U.S. We heightened the national conversation around the role of race in shaping drug policy and moved vital issues – like legalizing cannabis, ending mass incarceration, and prioritizing health and harm reduction responses to the overdose crisis – from the fringes of U.S. politics to the mainstream.

We are ambitious risk takers and unrelenting advocates with radical imaginations, fighting to change hearts and minds and build a world that centers justice, communities, and dignity. We have more than 40 staff in New York, California, New Mexico, and Washington, DC; an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million, 12,000 dues-paying members and more than 250,000 online subscribers. We have a solid track record of success at the local, state, and federal levels and consistent visibility in prominent media and policy circles.

DPA has recently undergone an intensive strategic planning process to determine our mission, direction, and organizational priorities for the next 10 years. Beginning in 2022, DPA will begin publicly rolling out our new strategic plan, in conjunction with a new website and new visual identity later in the year.
