The Systems Department in the U.S. office of Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) acts like the organization’s central nervous system, providing the vital information infrastructure to ensure the smooth functioning of all its operations. The Systems Department is responsible for building, configuring and maintaining the technical architecture, both physical and virtual, which ensures MSF can achieve the ambitions of its mission.



MSF-USA is seeking an experienced Data Architect to work closely with our software and application design and implementation teams to recommend database structures based on the data storage and retrieval needs within each department and business unit. The Data Architect will be responsible for helping the organization with everything from developing a strategy for enterprise information management and developing reporting systems to monitoring our database environments and devising routines for continuously improving the data structures and quality. The successful candidate will also provide analysis and recommendations to the Systems Department leadership and project management team for improving the overall quality of data and its usability.

The Data Architect will develop a viable roadmap to ensure a successful data management strategy with the enterprise, including but not limited to CRM, Digital Marketing, HR and Financial Systems. The Data Architect may also be called upon to provide expertise and support to the fundraising department on data analysis and fulfilling data requests, working closely with the Senior Data Analyst in the fundraising department.



Development of Enterprise Data Architecture (75%):

  • Provide insight into the changing database storage and utilization requirements for MSF-USA and offer suggestions for solutions, working with Systems Department Business Analysts as a liaison with departmental users to ensure changing requirements are appropriate and well-understood by all stakeholders
  • Define and maintain a comprehensive Entity Relationship Model across departments and business units; model and design the applications data structure, storage, and integration
  • Create data monitoring models for each product within the enterprise roadmap and update models as necessary, especially as they are affected by new releases
  • Develop database design and architecture documentation across departments
  • Help maintain the integrity and security of the organization’s databases; work with the Information Security Manager to establish privilege-based access to sensitive data across the enterprise
  • Work with the users, vendor solution architects/designers, and business analysts to define the data requirements and structure for the applications
  • Work with the integration solution architects and designers to design the integration solutions
  • Assist in determining the cross-application data standards, data distribution standards and tuning strategies
  • Review the database deliverables throughout development to ensure quality and traceability to requirements and adherence to all quality management plans and standards
  • Ensure that the developers and database administrators responsible for developing the database thoroughly understand the requirements and designs
  • Consider the data backup and replication requirements as part of the Business Continuity Plan for each enterprise application
  • Ensure security in reporting and data storage


Senior Data Analyst Support (25%):

  • Work on report developments, data cleansing and/or de-duplication processes
  • Support Senior Data Analyst in increased automation of ETL routines for routine marketing campaign data requirements
  • Support ad hoc data requests and challenges for marketing campaign fulfillment and other data requests from the fundraising teams


Extent of Public Contact 

The Data Architect will have frequent contact with people outside the organization including vendors, consultants, volunteers, donor advisory boards and members of the public.



  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or related field (master’s degree preferred)
  • 5-7 years of experience with information technology programs and services, with demonstrated expertise in enterprise data management and related technologies
  • 5-7 years of data architect experience
  • Experience with data modeling tools and data repository technologies (e.g., data warehouses, data-marts, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodology and concepts
  • Understanding of information systems and data life-cycle management best practices and methodologies, formal systems engineering life cycle (SELC), and systems development life cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience with web services, enterprise data management, master data management, information security, applications development, and cloud-based architectures
  • Experience with enterprise data management technologies, including database platforms, ETL tools, and SQL
  • Solid technical background with understanding and/or hands-on experience with CRM, Marketing, HR and/or Financial systems
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills



  • Experience with implementation, administration, and use of SalesForce CRM/Marketing Cloud and NetSuite ERP strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with non-profit fundraising technologies and principles
  • Strong commitment to MSF mission and humanitarian principles
