Summary:

Under general supervision, the Communications Associate works with programmatic staff in the Intelligence Project to develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies to help maximize national awareness of SPLC’s expertise on hate and extremism. The Communications Associate is responsible for a wide array of communications activities which include recognizing and maximizing opportunities in the news cycle and they must be able to juggle multiple assignments and collaborate effectively with staffers at all levels in a fast-paced environment.

The SPLC’s Intelligence Project monitors activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists and shares key intelligence and analysis about the radical right with the media, government officials and the public.

 

Primary Job Functions:

  • Obtain media coverage of the SPLC and for the Intelligence Project. This includes aggressive pitching of stories and op-eds to reporters, planning and organizing press conferences, podcasts and other events, distributing press releases and other materials, fielding media requests on a daily basis, booking SPLC experts on radio and TV talk shows, and taking advantage of opportunities in the news cycle
  • Develop and implement comprehensive media strategies designed to provide rapid response to breaking news and build public and political support for SPLC’s mission and programmatic goals
  • Write and edit press releases and advisories, talking points, op-eds, letters to the editor, fact sheets, and other materials
  • Build and cultivate relationships with key reporters, editorial writers, columnists, producers, and news and talk show hosts
  • Assist with message development for SPLC’s issues and activities
  • Manage, expand and maintain database of media contacts
  • Monitor, analyze and report results and outcomes of department’s efforts

 

Qualifications:

Education and Related Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minimum of 2 years related work experience
  • Knowledge of and experience working with national news media and online media
  • Exceptional communications skills, including clear, concise writing and ability to frame complex issues for the media, members, and public

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong interest in and passion for social and racial justice
  • Team player with an entrepreneurial spirit and ability to collaborate effectively with staff members at all levels in a fast-paced environment
  • Must take direction well but be self-motivated with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure
  • Must be highly organized and possess the ability to prioritize work
  • Must be familiar with advocacy and/or political efforts

 

Other Special Considerations:

This position can be located in Montgomery, AL or Atlanta, GA.

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
