OneGoal

OneGoal (non-profit) is a leading postsecondary access and success organization dedicated to closing the degree divide and creating a more equitable future. The OneGoal classroom-based model serves students whose postsecondary opportunities might be limited due to their academic and socioeconomic profiles. Students take the OneGoal class during their junior and senior years of high school and continue receiving one-on-one support through the first year of their postsecondary journey.

Despite decades of work and millions of dollars invested, the degree divide continues to be one of our nation’s most complex and critical injustices, with deep roots in systems of oppression and racism. Only 22% of students from low-income communities earn a college degree, compared to 67% of their peers from high-income areas.

OneGoal has grown from a small afterschool program serving just 32 students in Chicago to a nationwide movement that is serving some 12,500 students in six communities. Our model, honed over 14 years, has three core differentiators: A rigorous, culturally relevant content and experience, cohorts of students who can support each other over the course of three years, and a teacher who supports our most vulnerable students’ long-term ambitions. 88% of OneGoal high school graduates enroll in a postsecondary institution and 79% of those who enroll persist one year after high school.

The Person

OneGoal is seeking a Business Analyst to serve at the intersection of the OneGoal Program / Product stakeholders and the Engineering team. In this role, you will be working to translate requirements into user stories for technical development for custom software products, as well as off-the-shelf software product integrations. The Business Analyst will ensure that the needs of OneGoal’s stakeholders: Fellows (students), Program Directors (teachers), School Districts, and Staff, are being met by writing the requirements for new features and also testing new product development features and assessing the functionality of those features

The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, demonstrated experience in technical requirements writing, experience troubleshooting and testing, a customer-service orientation, and a commitment to thorough documentation. Being analytically minded, detail oriented, and passionate about improving systems to improve the experience for OneGoal’s fellows is critical for this role.

You will do this by:

  • Proactively seeking to understand each program or business division’s objectives and how they fit into the overall business and technical strategy
  • Interviewing internal stakeholders to gather information on their needs and preferences and use this information to make recommendations for best fit solutions that will meet the needs of the stakeholders while being a practical and stable investment for OneGoal
  • Understanding how the program or business objectives intersects with technology and helping translate those objectives into business and functional requirements
  • Translating UX workflows, UX wireframes, and UI designs into functional and technical requirements
  • Facilitating technology discussions between engineering teams and business stakeholders regarding optimizing technical solutions, as well as negotiating schedule changes and understanding priority as needs arise during agile development
  • Communicating how requirements fit into development milestones and software releases a part of managing a larger roadmap
  • Supporting product owners by helping to manage the backlog of requirements in the form of user stories
  • Developing, documenting, and executing test plans, use cases, scripts, and procedures for product features
  • Monitoring post-production processes to ensure accurate completion of all deployments
  • Identify existing gaps, optimizations, and future opportunities for the product by collaborating with our User Support Coordinator to have a deep understanding of current user issues and user desires

Though the Business Analyst is likely to see himself/herself/themselves in the following examples, these are not requirements. These examples are designed to help you determine if this opportunity aligns with your own passion and purpose.

You believe deeply in our Fellows and their ability to graduate from a post-secondary institution.

  • You believe that our Fellows face real systemic barriers to post-secondary completion, and that empowering their families, their teachers and themselves to own their unique path will help them to overcome those barriers.
  • You have audacious hope for a future where every young person in America will have a real opportunity to complete their post-secondary aspiration – and the life that comes with it.

You put people first

  • You understand that people drive impact for our fellows, not technology. You work to build technology that will empower fellows and staff to spend time doing what matters: deepening authentic relationships with one another.
  • Your relationships with key stakeholders and business partners are authentic and grounded in honesty, integrity, and trust. You earn people’s trust and maintain confidence by letting others speak and understanding their viewpoint.

You love the big picture but are obsessed with the details

  • You’re able to easily navigate between high-level/big picture strategy and the minute details that are critical to having effective, bug-free software that meets user needs
  • Things don’t fall through the cracks with you because you understand what’s at stake. You’re proactive in establishing personal systems and processes to ensure your ability to keep track of high volumes of information, to easily access it and to use that information to make data-informed decisions.

You are a puzzle-solver and strategist.

  • You like to explore and build innovative approaches and have designed new ways of doing things. You make connections, determine fits, and build plans that are responsive to interlocking and evolving challenges and opportunities.
  • Contingency-planning and problem-solving excite you, and working to streamline and improve systems gives you energy.
  • You are driven by solving at both the group and individual level, using both data and experience, recognizing the complexity of action and strategy requires evidence as well as an ability to dream big.
  • You are able to structure and process qualitative and quantitative data and draw insightful conclusions from it that impact programmatic strategies and outcomes.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience with requirements elicitation, and business and/or functional requirement writing in an Agile environment
  • 1+ years of experience in executing and writing test scripts for existing and new features on web applications; mobile apps a plus
  • 1+ years of experience supporting product customizations and integrations with CRM systems such as Salesforce, and/or LMS tools such as Canvas
  • Experience working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders and communities across diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience in writing documentation
  • Experience working with third party vendors with an understanding of systems integration
  • Experience using work tracking systems: bug, user request (e.g. JIRA, Monday, Asana, Zendesk)
  • Understanding of how back-end and web-based systems interface with each other
  • Understanding of the software development life cycle; agile and CI
  • (Optional) Academic or continuing professional study in Computer Science related fields, including AI/Machine Learning, and big data

Soft skills:

  • Dedication to regularly communicating status updates, issues and risks to project stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including negotiation, problem resolution, and customer service
  • Ability to distill feedback from disparate sources, make recommendations, and decisions with experience in translating data into action and product improvements.

  • Consistent project management skills fueled by persistence and amazing follow through
  • Curious, insightful and innovative with a natural bias for action, thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Views differences between individuals (race, gender, age, cultural heritage, neuro and physical ability, education and lifestyle) as an asset and demonstrates an appreciation of diversity within OneGoal and with our stakeholders
