The Women in Nonprofit Tech group is part of NTEN’s Community of Practice program.
Michelle is the founder/director of MEDIAGIRLS (www.mediagirls.org), a nonprofit that provides programming which teaches girls to critique the way girls and women are portrayed in the media, with an emphasis on creating empowering content.
She is an author, journalist, and filmmaker whose projects have been featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Katie Couric’s talk show “Katie,” “The Today Show,” Fox TV, PBS’s World Compass; numerous radio shows; and national publications including The Washington Post, Psychology Today, Parenting, MORE, and U.S. World News & Report. Michelle is the author of the book I Love Mondays (Seal Press, 2012), the co-author of the national bestseller I’m Not Mad, I Just Hate You!: A New Understanding of Mother-Daughter Conflict (Viking, 1999), the filmmaker behind the award-winning documentary “Seeking Happily Ever After” distributed in 2010 by Lionsgate, and the author of Seeking Happily Ever After (Tarcher Penguin, 2010). Michelle has freelance written for numerous national publications, and was Sr. Editor of Girls’ Life magazine and Mother Earth News. Michelle lectures and leads workshops for girls and women at numerous institutions, and is currently producing a documentary about only children called One and Only.
She was a volunteer for two years at Strong Women, Strong Girls, and blogs regularly for the award-winning Huffington Post Parents and Girls Leadership Institute. Michelle has given numerous lectures and workshops for women and girls around the U.S., and spoken at institutions including: Harvard University, Stanford University, Boston College, Boston University, Clark University, Sixth & I, and The Hill Center. She has also spoken at several conferences, including Mom 2.0 Summit, Celebrating Women: Mind, Body & Spirit, The National Media Literacy and Education Conference, and The Worcester Women’s Leadership conference.
