Flickr Photo by ptFlickr Photo by ptLast week, we kicked off the year with the NTEN Technology Leadership Series with John Kenyon. This Thursday, the second webinar of the series will be Building the Foundation: Hardware, Software and Networks and we're excited to announce that we have a last-minute addition, special guest star: Allen Gunn from Aspiration.

Allen is a skilled communicator and facilitator in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors. He draws from engineering, teaching, and volunteer experiences, and is passionate about helping nonprofits and NGOs make better use of software technology. Allen will add an Open Source Software perspective to John's explanations of hardware, software, and networks.

It's not too late to join us for the whole series (with access to the recording of the first webinar and our online discussion group) or you can just join us for tomorrow's webinar.

Become a Tech Leader in 2009

Submitted by Anna on Tue, 01/06/2009 - 12:16pm

Flickr Photo by lumaxartFlickr Photo by lumaxartThe web is abuzz with resolutions for 2009 -- NTEN included! We'd like to help you put a little action behind the words, with the NTEN Technology Leadership Series.

Holly's first resolution is To Use Technology to Work "Smarter". This is exactly what John Kenyon will focus on teaching nonprofit leaders in the Leadership Series.

And it goes in hand with resolution number 2, Experiment with Technology, as well: successful nonprofit leaders know how to use technology to their advantage -- managing technology work for their organizations, not the other way around. This webinar series will give you the information and skills you need to become a technology leader.

You'll also be able to work with us on number 3, Share Your Successes (and Failures) through an accompanying online discussion group, where we'll work together and share our experiences throughout the series.

The opportunity starts this Thursday, January 8. John Kenyon will host this series of 7 webinars with special guest speakers Robert Weiner, Eric Leland, and Beth Kanter.

NPTech Code of Conduct

Flickr Photo: kota2006Flickr Photo: kota2006The NPTech Professional Principles Affinity Group has been hard at work these last few months. Led by John Kenyon, Nonprofit Technology Strategist, the group has tackled a different topic each week to create a code of conduct that will show the world that we, as nonprofit professionals, follow the basic tenants of ethical service, whether as staff, support orgs, consultants, or vendors.

The need for these principles also arose out of a desire to have a standard most of the field could agree on to help connect us to one another.

The following is the result of the discussion:

In her recent report for the Overbrook Foundation, Allison Fine quotes a grantee who expresses what many think about emerging Web 2.0 tools: "I think I'm missing something really big, but I don’t know what it is or how to find out what it is." If you or your colleagues feel the same way, take heart.

Every day, organizations find new ways to bring their stories to life through digital media and the internet. There is brave new world emerging where users generate content. New ways of engaging and interacting with information are being created, new communities are being formed based on personal interests and affiliations, and digital media is being used to tell stories.
