Give us 10 minutes (and save yourself from hours of boredom)

> Take the survey

Given the current economic climate, everyone’s looking for ways to cut costs and work smarter. And that means more organizations may turn to teleconferences, videoconferences and webinars instead of in-person meetings. Makes sense in theory, but will this really be a good thing?

You’ve probably endured enough badly-run “long distance meetings” to agree that these can be serious time-wasters. On the other hand, there are some organizations that are learning how to master these technologies. Our colleague Andy Goodman (author of Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes) wants to find and share those best practices (as well as the common mistakes we should all avoid), but first he needs your help.

His online survey takes only about 10 minutes to complete, and in return for your time, he’ll send you a complete report with all the results in April. So give him just a few minutes now, and hopefully he can save you from countless boring hours in the months to come!

> Take the survey

And then send over a colleague and help make this study even more comprehensive. Thanks for your help!

Submitted by Annaliese on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 10:01am

If you haven't been attending the Storytelling & Social Media series, presented by Techsoup Global and NTEN, you've been missing out!

I was fortunate enough to help host the 4th session in the 5-part series. Danielle Brigida from NTEN Member organization NWF gave a great introduction to using social news and bookmarking tools to help "create buzz" for your organization's news and issues.

You can play the recording and keep the discussion going over in Techsoup's online forums.

The final session is next Wednesday. Social-media-for-nonprofits guru Beth Kanter will dicuss ROI: measuring the return on your investment in social media.

Nonprofit IT Leadership Redux

Submitted by Brett on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 12:00pm

The blog post Holly wrote recently on the leadership gap in Nonprofit IT departments has been gaining traction -- along with quite a few comments. It seems she's touched a nerve, and that's a good thing. As she says, "More nonprofit EDs need to understand technology's strategic importance."

Nonprofit technology leadership is one of the issues we care about the most here at NTEN. For the sector to work as efficiently as possible, Executive Directors and other nonprofit leaders need to feel comfortable making technology decisions without formal technology training. Equally as important, IT Staff need leadership skills to bring technology out of the back office and into the strategies of their nonprofit organizations.

We're doing what we can to address the issue with our Technology Leadership Series of webinars.

Who Wants to Be a Technology Leader?

Submitted by Anna on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 11:56am

John Kenyon, Nonprofit Technology Consultant, opens up to the NTEN community once again to train another round of NpTech Leaders in the NTEN Technology Leadership Series. John does an excellent job of teaching in plain English: you will leave the series as a technology leader, an important role in today's fast changing nonprofits.

Here are some words from past series participants:

He is DEFINITELY the best presenter for any webinar I've taken...numerous slides...not pretentious...good discussion time and facilitation

John's been great - this could be hard stuff to "teach" since it's not the most exciting topic - AND it's online... He's doing great.

At the end of the series, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand and contribute to technology conversations
  • Make smart technology decisions for your organization
  • Increase your organization’s efficiency
  • Identify and evaluate creative ideas for using technology to meet your mission

NTEN and NOSI are collaborating on a webinar series on free and open source software. Have questions about implementing open source software? Wonder about how Joomla or CiviCRM worked? Want to hear about people who've implemented open source applications? Learn about these things and more from FOSS expert Michelle Murrain!

You can register for the entire series or for individual webinars. The first webinar, "The Key is the Community: How to Get Support for Open Source Software", will be held Tuesday, January 29th, at 11 am Pacific, 2 pm Eastern. One of the richest sources of support for any open source application, whether it be Firefox or Drupal, Linux or CiviCRM, is the community of users and developers that are involved. Learn about how to look at those communities when evaluating software to use, and get support from those communities when you need it.

Other series sessions include:

The series was designed and will be facilitated by Michelle Murrain, Coordinator of NOSI. There will be many guest presenters, all experts in their specific areas.
