The Center for Democracy and Technology is seeking a Director of Development with a strong major gift background to create and oversee its growing development department. This is a new position and a new department within the organization, offering the right candidate an exciting opportunity to both design and implement a multi-year, multi-tiered fundraising strategy for a cutting edge Internet policy organization. The organization is currently well-funded by foundation grants and corporate donations but is looking to grow in mission critical areas (about $1-2 million additional resource per year) as well as create a strategic reserve. The position reports to the President.

Responsibilities of the Director of Development include:

Work with the senior CDT team and outside consultants to create and execute a cultivation strategy for potential individual, corporate and foundation donors
Research, cultivate, engage and expand CDT's donor base for individuals, large donors, corporations and foundations
Manage a high-end portfolio to include complex gifts
Meet with donors at all levels to solicit gifts
Engage with CDT senior management and board on development strategy and solicitations
Manage Fundraising Campaign Committee
Assist in the recruitment of additional campaign committee and board members
Write donor cultivation letters and concept papers
Manage foundation grants program
Work with consultants to develop and execute event fundraising strategy, provide donor support for both large annual fundraising event and smaller salon dinners and regional events
Recruit, train and manage Development Associate
Oversee efforts to ensure proper administrative processes, stewardship is on-going, and tracking and reporting tools are in place, including donor files and database
Grow development staff as needed
