Our organization is dedicated to the development and implementation of simple, robust, inexpensive, folk-technology systems to provide households and communities with safe drinking water in a sustainable and self-reliant manner. We currently have ongoing projects and collaborations serving communities in the US, Asia (Thailand and India), and Latin America (Nicaragua and Bolivia).
Our work has both laboratory and field aspects. With colleagues at major universities in the US and Thailand, our researchers are conducting experiments to address the principal scientific questions implied in the use of low-cost filtration media such as charcoals/biochars to remove hazardous synthetic chemicals such as pesticides from drinking water. In the field, our engineers are developing, deploying and monitoring prototype water treatment systems in situ.
A leader must be able to grasp the scientific and technical aspects of our work, and also have a deep understanding of the cultural and sociological challenges that arise in appropriate technology implementation in communities worldwide.
A candidate will display well-honed proficiency in social networking, fundraising, and organizational capacity building. He/she will be conversant in technical matters related to the fields of environmental chemistry and ecological economics.
A candidate will also exhibit dedication, wisdom and ecological consciousness, and possess a philosophical orientation in accord with our ideals of decentralization, democracy and empowerment of people at the level of both the individual and community. We are seeking someone to help us facilitate the development of human-scale appropriate technologies, agrarian ethos and praxis, and local self-reliance.
Salary commensurate with the candidate’s fundraising abilities. We are currently an all-volunteer organization, and we are committed to keeping overhead very low in order to channel all resources into project work.
Experience and credentials from green business management, academic programs and prior employment in the non-profit sector a prerequisite. Landmark Education certificate a big plus. High-quality connections within the “green,” “sustainability,” “appropriate technology,” “permaculture,” “organic/agrarian,” “eco-consciousness,” etc. communities a must.
