Earthjustice, the nation's leading environmental legal advocacy organization, works nationally and internationally to prevent climate change, protect wild places and wildlife, and defend the right of all people to a healthy environment. We achieve these goals by using the power of the U.S. courts to enforce, strengthen and maintain our environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of environmental organizations, coalitions and communities.
We currently have an opening for an Online Director. The Online Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating online communications programs for Earthjustice, developing an overall plan for electronic information management, researching and adopting new technologies and software, managing content across multiple web sites and email lists, and integrating online with offline communications. This position supervises the work of the web team in implementing this plan and coordinates with staff from all parts of the organization, works in partnership with Communications, Development, and Policy and Litigation staff to grow and cultivate Earthjustice’s online community, tracks and evaluates online strategies and makes changes accordingly and manages ongoing relationships with key vendors and represents Earthjustice at key industry events.
Major Responsibilities
Online communications:
• Develop plans for online communications and integrate online efforts with the rest of Earthjustice’s outreach programs;
• Oversee the restructuring and redesign of the website, in consultation with key Communications staff and others across the organization;
• Work with individuals throughout the organization to identify opportunities for improving communications using online technologies;
• Oversee the development of Earthjustice’s presence on social networking sites;
• Oversee use of Earthjustice’s electronic mailing lists that reach donors, reporters, and activists, specifically with the goal of increasing the list sizes.
Evaluation:
• Use web site activity information to identify and manage website content and design changes that could improve placement in search engines, increase ease of use, increase traffic to the site, and the length of time a user spends on the site;
• Evaluate data from the results of online communication efforts to identify needs and set goals for increasing the size of Earthjustice’s online audience;
• Evaluate emerging online communications technologies & techniques.
Technology:
• Work with staff responsible for internal information management & databases to ensure integration with on-line databases both in the short term & long term;
• Manage relations with key vendors for online communications and oversee the use of tools they provide;
• Determine technology needs for the Communications Department and work with IT to implement the use of new technology.
Management:
• Responsible for the work of the Webmaster, Sr. Web Associate and Web Associate;
• Responsible for development & growth of all Earthjustice web sites;
• Work with Web Associate & Webmaster to evaluate opportunities for satellite sites;
• Identify & cultivate funding opportunities for online & technical activities;
• Responsible for creating and managing budget for web-related & technology items;
• Represents Earthjustice at industry events.
The ideal candidate will have:
Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in English/communications, environmental studies / scientific discipline, political science, or history.
Experience: 7+ years experience with using online communications to attract & retain an audience. Experience specifically with web design, online communications programs including fundraising, computer technology, writing projects, marketing, and graphic design strongly preferred. Staff management experience.
Skills: Broad understanding of Internet technology and technology application in the business environment. Interest in exploring new technologies and practices to communicate with an online audience. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Strong eye for design. Exceptional interpersonal skills. The ability to collaborate and work effectively with a broad spectrum of constituencies is critical. Experience applying technology to law firms and/or nonprofit organizations. Prior knowledge of database applications, html programming, Microsoft Office applications, and graphic design applications. Knowledge of Get Active software is a bonus. Strong familiarity with environmental issues.
This position will work out of our headquarters in Oakland, California. We are located ½ block from the 19th Street BART station in downtown Oakland.
