Year Up is a one-year, intensive training program that provides urban young adults, ages 18-24, with a unique combination of technical and professional skills, college credits, and paid corporate internships. Our mission is to prepare urban young adults for life and work in our technology-driven society while guiding them towards successful and rewarding careers and higher education. We achieve this mission through a high support, high expectation model that places our participants on a viable path to economic self-sufficiency.
We have achieved excellent results to date: 100% placement of qualified students into paid internships, 83% student retention, 90% of interns meet or exceed partner expectations, 87% of graduates placed in full or part-time positions, and a $15/hr average wage at placement. In our seventh year of operations, Year Up serves more than 500 students a year at sites in Boston, Providence, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Position Overview
Year Up is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and execute a strategic marketing and communications plan that will build a unified brand and enhance the visibility of Year Up nationwide. Reporting to the National Director of Strategic Growth and Impact and working collaboratively across multiple departments, the Director of Marketing and Communications will oversee all branding initiatives, the development of appropriate and compelling collateral materials, and the execution of effective public relations campaigns.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and oversee all marketing, communications, branding and PR activities for Year Up nationally
- Create a consistent national brand for Year Up and assist site staff in building Year Ups marketing presence locally, maintaining an appreciation for regional nuances
- Work collaboratively with Development and Corporate Partnerships departments to create marketing and communications strategies to support cultivation of individual and institutional donors
- Oversee the design and execution of updated graphics, art and visual content for Year Up materials
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with all vendors associated with marketing, communications, and PR activities, including copywriters, graphic designers, photographers, media consultants, and others
- Serve as primary liaison with all external media contacts
- Manage the marketing and communications budget and track expenditures, ensuring the most effective use of resources
Qualifications:
- At least 7 years of experience managing the marketing and communications function of a corporation and/or nonprofit organization
- Significant brand development and management experience and/or political campaign experience
- Demonstrated success in an entrepreneurial environment, with the ability to think strategically while executing tactically within a resource-constrained environment
- Experience developing and maintaining relationships both internally and externally (e.g. vendors, media contacts)
- Ability to make decisions independently combined with an ability to work collaboratively
- Creative, with the ability to identify effective and visually strong aesthetics
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail combined with an ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Commitment to the mission of Year Up, with a passion for working with urban youth and an unshakable belief in their potential
- Willingness to travel domestically 20-25% of the year
- Bachelors degree or equivalent experience required
