Puzzled Logic? Communicating via Email with Congress
The House of Representatives recently introduced a new feature to the web services it currently offers to House members. The new feature is a logic puzzle that requires human interaction before an email can be sent using the Write Your Representative email feature that many House members currently use. A demonstration of the puzzle is available on the House site. It is likely that this new system, if adopted by Representatives, will make it more difficult or impossible for third party mail systems (like CapWiz, Kintera, GetActive, and Convio) to send mail to Representatives. This could fundamentally alter the way in which organizations engaging with advocacy facilitate communications between their stakeholders and decision makers in the House.
The logic puzzle is a response to the sheer volume of email Representatives are trying to manage. But is it serving the cause of Demoncracy? there are many questions about the ethics of narrowing the gates of communication between Congress and the people. And there are as many questions around the idea that large-scale email campaigns are a valuable or useful form of communication. Is an email sent through an advocacy portal with the click of a mouse really a constituent communication?
The goal of this webinar is to bring key players to the table and gain clarity about how the logic puzzle feature will work, and understand how it will impact your work.
