Who we are:

Performant Software is a small but well-established software company working in the Digital Humanities. We partner with humanities scholars, to build software tools for research and teaching, in literature, history, art, the social sciences, law, architecture, and more. We have been serving clients across the United States, Europe, and Canada since 2006.

At Performant you will collaborate with scholars on cutting-edge research in the humanities, on a wide variety of projects; discovering new connections in the built environment in the Muslim world, mapping Melville’s walking itineraries in New York, London, Rome, and Paris, researching books as symbols in Renaissance art, or documenting the graves of African Americans at a neglected cemetery.

What sets this job apart:

  • Variety. We work on projects in a range of humanities domains and we build tools with a range of technologies, so you’ll have variety in your responsibilities, and fascinating work.
  • Flexibility. If you are eligible to work in the US and have a US address, you can work from anywhere, and you’ll have a very reasonable work/life balance.
  • Opportunity. You’ll work on a small, collaborative, professional team, on projects with world-class scholars, and you’ll have opportunities for professional advancement.
  • Staying power. Interest and activity in the Digital Humanities are growing. Performant has been growing with it since 2006, and we’re in it for the long term.

Required Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience with HTML, CSS and modern JavaScript (ES6), especially React.js
  • One or more years of experience with one or more of the following: Ruby, Python, Node.js, PHP, Java, SQL, Linux
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration skills in a development role
  • Interest in the interplay of technology and the humanities
  • Ability to work remotely with our team in the US/East time zone, and our clients worldwide

Very Desirable Qualifications:

  • Well-developed time management, task estimation and problem-solving skills, and a high degree of independence and initiative.
  • One year or more of full-time professional work experience, preferably in either software or higher education, or both.
  • Good understanding of one’s own areas of strengths and growth as a developer and a teammate, and eagerness to learn and to share knowledge.
  • Previous experience with Digital Humanities projects and related technologies, such as TEI, IIIF, JSON-LD.

What we offer:

  • Health and dental insurance are fully covered;
  • 15 days of paid time off plus holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas;
