Social media services can be a boon for non-profits, allowing organizations and members to learn, connect, share, and act. But these services also collect vast amounts of information when we use them, and outdated privacy law means that this information may not have the protection it deserves. We’ll learn a bit about online privacy law, discuss how non-profits are affected by the lack of legal and practical protection for private information in the social media space, and consider possible approaches to addressing this threat.

Presented by: Chris Conley, ACLU of Northern California

Chris Conley is the Technology & Civil Liberties Fellow at the ACLU of Northern California where he focuses on launching the organization’s new online privacy campaign, Demand Your dotRights. He has a background in both law (J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2007, Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Journal of Law & Technology) and technology (B.S.E. in electrical engineering from The University of Michigan in 1994; S.M. in computer science from M.I.T. in 1997), and combines both of those skills in his current role by discussing online privacy issues with both technologists and policymakers, producing educational materials ranging from short videos to Facebook applications, and encouraging everyone involved in the information ecosystem - users, developers, businesses, and lawmakers - to promote transparency and give users greater control of their own information.
