As the clear skies of autumn give way to winter's moody precipitates here in Portland, Oregon, we can feel cozier by staying connected to our communities. Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities to do so: you can nominate local unsung heroes or become a speed catcher for young leaders (read on to learn what that means), or find resources to help your organization have a successful fundraising season!
For those of you in our lovely state, there's a great opportunity to celebrate inspiring Oregonians who are making a difference in their communities by nominating them through the Meyer Memorial Trust's "I am Oregon" campaign. Both the nominators and nominees will be invited to their region's official launch of MMT's Oregon Unlimited in February, an online community space where Oregonians can connect and take action. Additionally, the Regional Representative will receive a trip to the 2013 National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Washington, DC. If you're in the New York City area on November 17, consider participating in DoSomething.org Boot Camp, a day of intensive training and networking that will help give young leaders under 25 the tools they need to grow their projects and ideas. If you're over 25 (and therefore an "old person"), you can become a "catcher" for the Speed Pitching sessions at the end of the day. Yep, these sessions are modeled after speed dating, giving attendees a 2 minute opportunity to pitch their causes and receive 2 minutes of feedback on how they can improve their pitch. Also coming up in November is the 2012 Nonprofit Software Development Summit, Aspiration's "Annual NPTechie Love Fest". From November 14-16, the event will take over Preservation Park in Oakland, California. Fundraising season is just around the corner and you probably know a great nonprofit that could benefit from some increased visibility. GreatNonprofits announced the launch of its "community-sourced" Top-Rated Awards. Claim or update your nonprofit and invite reviews to participate. The nonprofits that get 10 positive (4 or 5 star) reviews between September 1 and November 15 will receive a Top-Rated Award, national media coverage, and be promoted by GreatNonprofits and their media partners!
As your organization gears up for the giving season, consider taking a unique opportunity to ensure that you're providing a positive experience for your donors. Network for Good is holding its first ever Be Your Donor Day on October 24 to inspire nonprofits to step into their donors' shoes and experience the fundraising process from their perspective. Call your own number, try to make a donation at your own site, and confirm what type of thank-you and confirmations you receive. Network for Good reminds you that having "an amazing donor experience can boost nonprofits' fundraising results during the critical year-end fundraising season, and can result in more loyal donors who give more frequently". NTEN partnered with Charity Dynamics to conduct a first-of-its-kind donor engagement survey focused specifically on how individuals engage or prefer to engage with the nonprofits they support, and how their involvement impacts giving. The study gathered feedback from consumers across a diverse range of giving levels ($25-$5,000+) who have donated to a nonprofit in the past 12 months. The report will be released November 10, but you can sign up to receive it right now. You can learn more about the key findings by attending the webinar on November 9. Findings from the Donor Engagement Benchmark Study include:
- Nearly half of the survey respondents (47%) give a majority of their annual total donation amount to the charitable organization with whom they're most engaged.
- Nearly 30% of respondents indicated they fundraise on behalf of the charity they're most involved with at least once a year. 18% do this activity several times a year or more.
- Respondents who are highly involved with their favorit charity prefer to find out information about the organization on its website (28%), via email (18%), and Facebook (13%).
