Small is the New Big: 2009 eNonprofit Benchmarks Study Released

We just released the 2009 eNonprofit Benchmarks Study with our fantastic friends at M+R Strategic Services. The report is chock full of amazing and interesting information you can use to make better decisions about your online campaigns.

To help folks get started, we hosted a release party. Get the recording to see how Children's Defense Fund and HRC use benchmarks to increase the performance of their online campaigns.

Or, for those of you who can't be bothered to open another link -- that's how I roll, so I feel you -- here are some highlights from this year's report:

  • Social Media is hot, but email is where it's really at. Email still performs incredibly well across all categories -- from fundraising to advocacy. Open rates and click-throughs are holding steady.
  • Size of donation is down, but number of gifts is up.  Average gift size is way down compared to the 2007 data, but the blow has been cushioned by the sheer number of gifts nonprofits solicited online. Will gift size increase with an economic turnaround? We'll see...
  • Small is the new big. We're increasingly savvy in our list segmentation. Nonprofits in the study segmented in some pretty interesting ways, increasing their ROI along the way. This may indicate the influence of social media on email.
  • Integrated campaigns matter. We have a case study of a mobile/email campaign integration that yielded great results. Closely integrating our various outreach efforts will be even more critical in a world of fractured media.
  • Local organizations are getting on the bus. As more smaller orgs use these tools, we see they have the most room to grow -- and their lists ARE growing fast -- but they're taking the biggest hits in the fundraising department.

Get your copy of the report and take a listen to the webinar. Then tell me: how does your organization compare? What are you struggling with?
