The fine people at Social Actions have announced a new contest that hopes to further social change (the hoped-for final result), online democracy (the community will vote to determine winners), and abject geekiness (you get to code for a cause).

The "Change the Web Challenge" will give away more than $10,000 in prizes. For an idea of what they're looking for, check out  these examples of projects already using the Social Actions API:

  • 'Related Ways to Take Action' WordPress Plugin: A plugin you can add to any WordPress.org blog that identifies the keywords of each blog posts and then displays related ways to take action.

  • Twitter Action Pack: A directory of 30+ Twitter accounts that automatically post actions on the issues you care about.

  • Firefox Ubiquity Command: A Firefox mashup that lets you highlight any phrase as your browse the web and find related ways to take action.

You have until April 3rd to submit your project. The winners will be anounced at the 2009 Nonprofit Technology Conference.

May I suggest you learn more and get cracking?
