More Twitter Fun, Now with More Andy Carvin!
If you're on Twitter but don't follow Andy Carvin, you totally should. First, his tweets are REALLY informative. Second, they are often hilarious. Third, he may be the nicest guy on the planet. I know, because he let me bombard him with questions at SXSW and he's helped us figure out how to streamline Twitter usage at the NTC.
Our goal this year was to figure out a way to show ALL the tweets from folks at or talking about the NTC. Bless his heart, Andy showed us how to re-tweet any tweet with a keyword (in our case, the keyword is NTC) on our main Twitter presence for the conference: 08NTC.
I know some of you are interested in similar things, so I thought I'd share his instructions:
- Create a Twitter account that you plan to use for redistributing a collection of tweets. Be sure to keep the login/password info handy.
- Figure out what keyword you want to use and search for it on the Terraminds search engine. If you get zero search results, use the keyword in a tweet so it'll get picked up by Terraminds. Once it appears in Terraminds' search results, copy the URL of the RSS feed for those search results and set it aside.
- If you don't have an OpenID login, go to http://www.myopenid.com and create one. You'll need it for the next step.
- Go to http://www.twitterfeed.com and log in using your OpenID login and password. Once you've logged in, click "Go to my twitter feeds."
- Click "Create new twitter feed." When the form pops up, fill it out with the RSS feed you saved from earlier, along with the twitter account login/password you created in Step 1. Set the update frequency to five posts every 30 mins (the maximum allowed). Select the option to include title only, and uncheck the box for including the link. Then hit the submit button.
You're done! It may take an hour or so before Terraminds starts sending out your posts, but that should take care of it.
The one drawback I've seen so far is that there's an appreciable lag time. The re-tweets don't post in real time, so time-sensitive tweets won't be easily shared. But still: way better.
If you are coming to the NTC, or want to play along at home, follow the twitter action, or better yet, check out ALL the action via the NTC Widget!
