It's Not About Kevin Bacon

It's about you.  That's what's important to remember about harnessing the power of Web 2.0 for social change - and fundraising for your organization.

This week NTEN hosted a webinar, What Kevin Bacon Knows about Web 2.0: Six Degrees of Person-to-Person Fundraising, that demonstrated the tools available to individuals and organizations to turn everyone into a celebrity fundraiser.

Katya Andresen and Stacie Mann of Network for Good presented the webinar and discussed the success of specific person-to-person fundraising campaigns as well as the research and trends behind them.

People are motivated to give and act by friends, loved ones, and the personal stories that come with them. In a Web 2.0 world, that means that organizations can use that motivation to generate more actions and gifts with person-to-person fundraising campaigns that are inexpensive and easy to launch.

But, it's a little bit about Kevin Bacon too - who joined the webinar to explain why he kicked off the SixDegrees.org campaign.  In response to a question, he made the great point that what was important to him was that, with the tools and trends of Web 2.0 available, you don't have to compete for  and drain charity funding by setting up new campaigns and organizations that take resources to manage - you can funnel gifts and resources into the projects and missions already out there, using everyday channels like email, blogs, and social networking sites.

If you missed the webinar, you can get the recording here. And be sure to look for new matching-gifts contests from SixDegrees.org this summer.
